Community groups in the Lenadoon, Shankill, Markets, Cavehill and Ballynafeigh areas of Belfast have all received advice from us on objecting to large scale apartment developments. We helped groups in areas affected by the conversion of family homes into Houses in Multiple Occupation to successfully make the case for better planning policies to sustain local communities. Our work with the Residents’ and Health Group in the Lower Lisburn Road area included a community mapping project to identify local issues, problems and solutions and support in preparing a submission to the Planning Service on a new HMO Plan Policy for Belfast. North Down Community Network asked us to provide capacity building training for groups involved in planning issues. The training included details of opportunities for community involvement in the planning system and valid grounds for objecting to planning applications. Our work with Portstewart Community Vision and other groups along the north coast supported their lobby for planning policy changes to curtail the growth in second homes, apartments and HMO conversions and to object to planning applications which do not support the sustainability of local communities. |
